A good friend who is a devout, hijab-wearing, Salafi Muslim is thinking of joining Mastodon (or a Masto fork). Can anyone recommend Muslim community-oriented instances? I'd especially appreciate recommendations from Muslim women. 🙏 ❤️

@ShaulaEvans @pathfinder @islam My approach would be to start with a big, generic, non topic related instance. Read the */about page before you decide, most importantly the “server rules” (probably mastodon.social/about is a good choice). Take a look at the settings and tweak them if necessary (say “posting privacy” and such). Then find accounts to follow and probably there will emerge some instances worth to move to or create a new account on. (1/2)
Maybe it will even turn out it’s not important at all what instance you’re in. (2/2)
@ShaulaEvans That is one thing I have been searching myself in vain until now. I am also Hijabi, but since I left Twitter I am missing muslim company (and there, too, it was not too much. Too many muslim forums got killed by FB, nearly all I knew) - there are a few accounts here and there but no instance I found especially appealing. So, if you find an answer, I'd be greatful if you share it with me.
I had a look at paktodon, but for my taste it lacks visibility.
@NQrangutan I'd second that. Maybe not mastodon.social - best, no instance from Germany, if you ask me.

@ShaulaEvans @islam Is there perhaps something else than religion that your friend could find a suitable community around?
@SusanneDoering @ShaulaEvans @islam Try following hashtags, like #muslim, etc. Posts with those terms will then show up in your feed. Not a perfect answer, but it may help you find more people you'd like to connect with.
@SusanneDoering @ShaulaEvans @islam
You can develop a list of people across servers that you want to talk to. I have a number of lists and when I want to focus my interactions I click one up. People on other servers w your interests can be found by networking and using hashtags. Eg. #muslimpost
@ShaulaEvans @islam you asked a fairly straightforward question, "Can anyone recommend Muslim community-oriented instances?"
but i mostly see responses saying "i recommend something else" or "have you tried not doing that?" or something similarly unhelpful.
it seems frustrating. i hope your friend is able to discover a supportive community here

Maybe it's time for some good women to join together and start one ? Just saying ... if there isn't one already there should be one. So why not build it ?
@Godfrey642 I would if I could, believe me. But I have neither the technical knowledge nor the financial means to do that. And then, you would need people wanting to join - according to my searches of hashtags etc. I hardly find anyone. Plus, I don't think you can imagine the amount of complaints, hate posts and finally instance blocking a real muslim instance would face.

I am afraid we won't be able to help, it's really far from what we focus on, but maybe try asking @howtomuslim if they can help? Hope it helps and sorry we cannot be more helpful...
@idhn @yala @islam @SallyStrange @howtomuslim Thank you for the suggestion! I appreciate it. 🙏 ❤️
@SusanneDoering @ShaulaEvans @islam
I can imagine and it's heartbreaking.
But you have a right NOT to be invisible.
@Godfrey642 Thank you. I still hope someone will have the means to set up a suitable instance eventually - and then we might see how the visibility works. I am thinking about another way ... if I find the time next year 😉 @ShaulaEvans @islam
